BCI at the EACR Epigenetics conference

The 1st Basic Epigenetic Mechanisms in Cancer conference was held in Berlin last month, organised by the European Association for Cancer Research.

Our postdoctoral researcher from Dr Gabi Ficz's research group, Dr Emily Saunderson, attended the event as both a delegate and reporter. She produced a comprehensive summary of the meeting for the epigenetics-focused organisation EpiGenie.

Online Charity Christmas Auction 2015

The BCI Christmas Auction was a fantastic success, raising £1,250 for the Bridge to the Future scheme!

Nearly 40 items went under the virtual hammer; donations came from celebrities, sports starts, local businesses and national corporations. We thank everyone who donated, who gave their time as volunteers, and who bid for the items!

Pancreatic Cancer UK grants for five BCI group leaders

New grants from the charity Pancreatic Cancer UK will fund five projects here at BCI that aim to improve treatment options for pancreatic cancer patients.

The grants come from two separate schemes run by the charity and we are extremely grateful to all its supporters who have made these awards possible.

Funding secured to revolutionise personalised prostate cancer treatments

Barts Charity have funded a new project led by Dr Gunnel Halldén in our Centre for Molecular Oncology. This work aims to develop a method to test new combinations of cancer treatments on prostate cancer.

Ultimately they hope to use the test for individual patients, to provide personalised therapies...

£8m award for international collaborative effort

Trans-Atlantic Pancreatic Cancer

A trans-Atlantic collaboration involving scientists and clinicians from BCI has been awarded £8 million to tackle big research questions in pancreatic cancer.

The three year investment aims to accelerate the pace of research in the laboratory, with benefits for patients in the form of early phase clinical trials...

Barts Cake - Cancer Research UK's Science Cakes

For the third year running, Barts Cancer Institute held a local round of CR-UK’s “Science Cakes” competition.

Nine science-themed cakes were submitted, representing all manner of themes; from renewable energy, to the division of a plant cell, to a boiling-over conical flask!

BCI STARS 2015

Twenty-five school students aged 16-17 (year 12) joined us in July, having just completed their AS levels, to take part in the BCI STARS course - a one-week intensive practical course in general research laboratory skills.

STARS 2015 was a huge success aided in no small way by an award of £1000 from the Biochemical Society...
