Professor John Gribben, Lead for the Centre for Haemato-Oncology at Barts Cancer Institute and Consultant Haematologist at Barts Health NHS Trust, is part of a new BBC Two series called The Diagnosis Detectives. Professor Gribben is one of a panel of 12 of the UK’s leading medical experts who have been assembled to diagnose patients with life-changing symptoms that have puzzled other doctors and remained undiagnosed.

In the most recent episode, which aired at 9 pm on 14^th September, the panel are trying to help a patient called Hayley, who has an undiagnosed condition with symptoms including weight gain, muscle weakness, constant fatigue, hair loss and an enlarged spleen. Professor Gribben sends Hayley for blood tests to screen for infections and to check her immune system, and an abdominal CT scan to check her spleen in the hope to rule out an underlying cancer.

Speaking of his time on the show, Professor Gribben said:

“For me by far the best experience was working with the other Consultants on the show. We didn’t know each other at all before, but it was fascinating to be able to discuss such complex cases with such experts all sitting around the table to really get the very best input to help with diagnosis and we all got on very well indeed. Of course, meeting the patients and their families was wonderful too.”
